What to eat on Ozempic (and other GLP-1s)

On a GLP-1 like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, your appetite drops a lot — so the food you do eat has to work harder. The goal shifts from "eat less" (the medication handles that) to "make every bite count": enough protein to protect muscle, enough fibre to stay regular and full, and enough fluid to feel well. Here is how to eat on a GLP-1 without losing muscle or feeling rough.

Why eating changes on a GLP-1

These medicines slow how fast your stomach empties and dial down hunger. You fill up fast, food can sit heavily, and it is easy to under-eat protein and fibre simply because you are eating so little overall. That is exactly why quality matters more than ever.

Prioritise protein — every meal

Protein is the single most important thing to get right, because rapid weight loss can strip muscle along with fat. Aim to anchor every meal around a protein source, and hit it before you fill up on anything else. Most people on a GLP-1 do well aiming for 1.6–2.2g of protein per kg of body weight. See how much protein per day and high-protein foods for weight loss. We go deeper on why this matters in GLP-1 and muscle loss.

Don't forget fibre

GLP-1s commonly cause constipation. Fibre helps — plus it keeps you full and steadies energy. Build in vegetables, fruit, beans, oats and seeds. More in how much fibre per day.

Smaller meals, fewer side effects

What to limit

Sugary drinks and ultra-processed snacks give you calories without the protein or fibre you actually need on limited appetite. When you can only eat a little, these are the first to cut. Our guide on what ultra-processed really means helps you spot them.

Make every bite count on a GLP-1

forme scores your food against your goals and tracks your protein and fibre as you go — so on a smaller appetite, you can see at a glance whether you're hitting what matters.

The bottom line

Eating on a GLP-1 is about quality, not just quantity: protein first, fibre daily, smaller meals, plenty of fluid. That protects your muscle and keeps side effects down while the medication does its job. This is general information, not medical advice — always follow the guidance of the doctor who prescribed your medication.
